The event was again held at the Shadle Park High School Library Austin’s 447 upset victor secured him the trophy for the biggest upset.Ī total of 15 players took part this year. Bruceri beat both in a blitz playoff to claim the second place trophy.Ī pair of fast improving Rogers High sophomores, Alex Cooper and Austin Bonse, provided most of the upsets in the tourney. Johnson, the third seed, defeated teammate Chris Chappell, the second seed, in round three, and then came back in a tough position in game 4 to defeat Shadle Park junior Chris Bruceri, the top seed.īruceri, Community School sophomore Ryan Yancey, and Gonzaga Prep senior Tony Rupp all finished second with scores of 3.0. Jack Johnson, a sophomore at the Community School, won the Spokane high school individual championship with a perfect 4.0 score. JACK JOHNSON WINS HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP Shadle Park junior Chris Bruceri was a perfect 3.0 on the top board and won the trophy for the outstanding individual performance. A family-centered second team from Prep completed the field.

Defending co-champion Dishman Hills finished fifth at 1-2, showing the balance in the tourney. Rogers finished ahead of Shadle on tie-break. Rogers and Shadle Park, both short-handed with only three players, drew their own first round encounter and tied for third at 1.5. The second round head-to-head match with Prep pretty much determined the outcome of the tourney. The Community School finished second, winning two of its three matches. Six teams from five schools competed in this year’s event, which was held February 28. Gonzaga Prep rolled to the GSL team chess championship with a near perfect score, giving up only 1/2 point in three matches.
